Katoni’s role in supporting the client: Arc Flash studies were performed on a model of the power system built in ETAP software by Katoni based on data supplied by client.

Mitigation solutions were implemented across the Electrical network depending on the resultant incident energy levels at respective switchboards. Arc Flash Detection Systems were installed on their HV and Emergency switchboards (employing light and current detection).

Understanding the client’s needs & delivery: Following an Arc Flash Study and subsequent Protection Settings Review carried out on the platform’s electrical distribution, it was found that high Arc Flash Incident Energy Levels were present across a number of switchboards under different operating scenarios. The hazard levels are quantified in terms of Incident Energy measured in calories per square cm at the appropriate working distances. A  number of steps have been identified by Katoni to reduce the Incident Energies as elimination is not always possible particularly on legacy switchgear.

The Katoni Way: Katoni have considerable experience undertaking arc flash assessments within the Oil & Gas and other industrial facilities using the latest IEEE 1584-2018 and NFPA 70E calculation methods. Several options for hazard mitigation and maintenance mode systems were scored in terms of effectiveness, operator intervention and of course, cost.

Arc Flash Detection Systems were installed on their HV and Emergency switchboards (employing light and current detection) and a maintenance mode system was installed for the LV Accommodation Switchboard.
