Katoni’s role in supporting the client: Katoni carried out concept studies to determine possible sources of available power for electrification an FPSO via a third-party source including: Innovation and Targeted Oil & Gas (INTOG) windfarm, shore connection, proposed North Sea electrification connection etc. Studies were carried out on possible locations in which to locate topside electrification equipment on the FPSO and options on how this may be constructed given differing timelines for the future of the vessel.

Understanding the client’s needs & delivery: Our client was  considering what impact electrification would have on  FPSO’s generally and also as part of future business development opportunities.

Katoni carried out a ‘Power from Where’ study which concluded that electrification from a number of sources is possible. The design and installation of the new equipment required for electrification of the FPSO was outlined to allow the opportunity to fully, or partially electrify the asset from a range of low carbon / renewable power supplies.

The Katoni Way: The study included a first of its kind detailed consideration of the monitoring and control of the incoming power from an offshore wind array (OWA). It also explored how the OWA would be integrated with existing systems and how they work together along with additional new equipment to provide a reliable and maintainable source of low carbon electrical power for the vessel. The relative output from several OWA options was calculated and the impact this would have on platform operations and emissions was quantified.
